Once you’ve chosen and registered your own .uk domain name you can keep it for as long as you want, all you need to do is renew your registration when the time period is up (this could be anything from 1-10 years depending on what you purchased in the first place). Renewing your registration is a really simple process that can be handled by your Domain Name Provider with no need for you to worry at all.

In most cases, your Domain Name Provider will contact you to let you know that your domain needs renewing and will explain how easy it is to renew. Once you have confirmed you want to renew, the Domain Name Provider will contact us to let us know.

If we don’t receive a renewal notice by your expiry date, we’ll write to you directly to let you know that you’ve reached your expiry date and are at risk of having your domain name suspended. There’s no need to panic, if you decide you want to keep the domain name simply get in touch with your Domain Name Provider to extend your registration.

If you don’t renew your registration you will lose your place in the .uk landscape. Your website will be initially suspended, then cancelled and you won’t be able to receive any emails sent to your address.

If you have been using your domain name for business this will impact:
1. How your customers find you (and not your competitors)
2. How your customers contact you (instead of your competitors)
3. Online tools and sites that you use for business using your registered email address

As well as this, if you don’t renew your registration then someone else could come in and buy your domain name for their own business. We’ve seen that 5% of lapsed domain names are registered by someone else within one day of the original registration being cancelled.

Renewing your registration is a simple process between you and your Domain Name Provider (the organisation you purchased your registration from). They will probably email you before your registration is due to let you know what you need to do to renew and keep your domain name.

If you haven’t heard from your Domain Name Provider, but have heard from Nominet directly that you need to renew, then you should get in touch with your Domain Name Provider. If you’re not sure who your Domain Name Provider is then just pop your details into the box above and we can let you know.

You can renew your registration at anytime before the expiry date. You need to do this with your Domain Name Provider so check with them to see how early they will allow you to renew.

If you don’t renew your registration then you will lose your domain name, which means your website won’t be available and your email addresses won’t work.

Not only that, but your domain name will be available for other people or organisations to register so someone else could end up owning your website space and email addresses.

In the first case you need to contact your Domain Name Provider and let them know that you want to renew. The name of your Provider (the “Registrar”) should be in the email you received or you can find out who they are using the above Domain Information tool.
